Jean Marie asks: for those in Germany. My husband is currently in Schweinfurt Germany looking for housing for us (we're on the 'non-concurrent travel plan' lol). We have to live off post - does anyone have any suggestions about what cities to look into / stay away from? We'd like to stay within a 45 minute drive to Schweinfurt. TIA!

Kerry K. says:  I'm in schweinfurt right now we live about 20 mins away from the post seems alot of ppl are living more out this way as in schweinfurt there is nothign much available ..has he been in touch with the housing office?

Rachel M. says: most places are def within 45 min.....if you guys have pets your options will be pretty limited we do have a pet and looked at 4 diff apartments 3 of them were within 10 min from post but the villages were VERY small and we didnt love the apartments the 4th one that we ended up getting is the farthest from post (about 20-25 min depending on traffic) but the village is much bigger than everything else we looked---it has a few restaurants 3 grocery stores and ice cream shop a kebap place a few bakeries etc---i dont know what the availability here will be but its a great village called arnstein. but if housing is anything like it was when we got here your options will be a bit limited and you can't afford to be REAL picky. your best bet is to have your husband go into housing and see what they have available and have your husband go check those places out and take a look at the village they are in to see if its something that suites you guys. you CAN look for housing on your own but it can be a little difficult i tried when we first got here and ran into language barriers people just plain not getting back to me and locals not wanting to rent to americans but its still an option for you. If you have any questions i might be able to answer shoot me a message and i'll be more than happy to help :)

Mikaela C. says: Housing emailed us and said its a 30 day wait for the 2 bedrooms on post so we are just going to have DH sign up to be on the wait list for on post housing.

This is my first duty station as an army wife.   My husband has been in for 16 years.  Everyone told us how great Germany is so we couldn't wait to PCS here.  This place has been a living nightmare.  To the Co he is assigned the rude people (Germans and Americans!) the high cost of living and just a general bad ora around this place.  Once you get outside of Schweinfurt Germany is awesome.  Schweinfurt has 4 different posts.  You have the PX health clinic ACS and shopette on one post.  Another post is the living quarters for families that people refer to as "trash can manor..." and the commissary (which is tiny and always out of stock of everything).  Another post has the bowling center gym and more family living quarters.  The main post has most of the single soldier living quarters another shopette with 4 gas pumps (makes no sense!) and it's where most soldiers work.  We cannot wait to get out of Schweinfurt.  If you recieved orders here I recommend to try everything to get them changed.  I have only met a couple people that actually enjoy this place.  Everyone else is very unhappy and are ready to leave as well.  Good luck.
